The word Endodoncy is derived from the Greek “endo”
which means “inside” & “odontos” which means
“tooth”. The Endodontic treatment treats the inside
of the tooth. If a cavity causes infection in the
bed where the nerve is located, the only way to save
the tooth without removal is with a root canal.
Inside the hard shell of the tooth, is a pulp formed
by blood & lymphatic veins and nerves that nourish
the tooth. The root canals that contain the pulp
extend from the end of the root all the way to the
bone.
A deep cavity or a lesion on the surface of the
tooth cab cause severe damage & infections of the
nerves & veins of the pulp. Endodoncy or canal
treatments consist in cleaning the pulp chamber as
well as the infected conduits and placing a filling
material in order to seal the spaces previously
cleaned and disinfected. |
