Odontopediatry is a branch of Odontology which deals
specifically with children. The odontopediatrist,
more than anything, will be the one in charge of
exploring & treating the patient. He is also in
charge of detecting possible anomalies in the
position of the maxillaries or other teeth give
restorative treatments or refer the patient to an
orthodontist if necessary. The restorative treatment
principally deals with trauma & the use of sealants
that consist in lightly filling ruts & fissures of
the dental piece without, as much as possible,
removing dental material in order to avoid cavities
and to treat resulting cavities & their
consequences.
The major difference between the usual Odontology
and Odontopediatry treatment of cavities is the
presence of temporary or milk teeth in children. The
treatment of temporary teeth will be less aimed at a
long term solution but rather, will be more
aggressive to insure that the temporary teeth
problems don’t impact the health of the underlying
permanent teeth. |
